This past weekend we headed out to for our family lake trip. Normally, we stay in the RV, but this year with the addition of my grandson, we just don’t all fit. So we decided to rent a house and head to Lake Whitney.

Lake Whitney is a beautiful lake with rock walls and if not super high, great rocks to jump off. This year’s trip was special because of our oldest girls’ significant others were planning to become divers. Clint and I have been to Lake Whitney and thought we could get four twenty feet dives done, but when we arrived arrived with the rain, water conditions, and general murk- you could not see your feet!!

This turned out to be a blessing because a quick Google Search turned up Wheeler Branch just 40 minutes up the road in Glenn Rose, Texas. Diver’s Depot had sent out an email about it last year, but we had never made it!

Wheeler Branch is a locally owned water source for Somervell County. It is a couple of miles off Highway 67 and super easy to find. The attendants were super happy people and very helpful. Admission was only $10/person.

Upon arrival, we recognized bouys, very nice pavilions on the water, restrooms, and geese. Water entry was easy, seveal floating docks for giant stride entry, and very clear water. The pavilions are first come and several were open. We jumped out and began unpacking the trucks. With a family of divers, it literally is like packing the kitchen sink.

The first few dives were training dives. From the advice of other divers at Wheeler Branch, we decided to do our skills beside the floating dock. Heading under the water seemed like Heaven. The water was a light green color, but bright and full of life. Under the dock lived several sun perch. They were happy to be out and about. We took our compas heading and headed out toward the poker table. Here lived a NICE bass. This bass protected his area like it was sacred. The middle daughter Khloe’ took pictures. The Sea Life iphone case did a great job and is so easy to switch from still photography to the video. It was one very relaxing and unique dive.

The next dives were just as amazing. Below the service was a helicopter, boat, petrified wood pile, amazing tall grass, armadillo sculpture, and more. There was a pretty hard thermocline. This showed to only be 10 degress, but it was COLD.

Check out the water clarity in these pictures.

Overall, I give Wheeler Branch an 8/10. The only thing that would be better is if there was a dive ship close by that could fill tanks.

The weekend was highly successful and Bailey and Dylan both were able to get certified and do a little exploring.

If you are out Glenn Rose direction, check out Wheeler Branch.
